Ambri ice rink by Mario Botta
Renovation of the Ambri Piotta ice rink

The legendary Valascia ice rink, the temple and stronghold of the historic Ambrì-Piotta ice hockey club (HCAP), has been replaced by a structure worthy of the name. The new Ambri-Piotta ice rink, built at Ambrì airport, is now a multi-purpose stadium. Work on the CHF 50 million project began in 2018 for an opening in the fall of 2021.
It was designed by the world-famous architect Mario Botta. In addition to creating a new professional hockey rink, it was necessary to design a multi-purpose structure that could be used all year round for Ambrì and the entire valley.
The stadium has a capacity of 6775 spectators, a number that corresponds to the postal number of Ambri. The stadium is mainly used by ice hockey teams with a golden rule; May the best team win!
In a few words:
- The stadium has a capacity of 3,000 standing and 3,775 seats
- 11 lounges, 4 restaurants, 8 refreshment bars and 23 dine&view areas
- 1 central LED scoring board with 4 cube sides, L. 6 x 4.50m
- And the LED perimeter, pitch 10 mm, with a length of 240 m x H. 1m
- Equipment of the control room and the display systems
- With 3 projectors and 15 monitors
The realization of the project also shows the importance of a constructive teamwork between the design offices, the electricians and Lemanvisio, throughout the different phases of the project.
